International trade and foreign investment

Transnational companies carry out an important part of the production of advanced goods, investment in research and technological development and international trade. Although they play a relevant role in the region’s exports and in the production of advanced durable consumer goods, they do not contribute significantly to job creation and in some countries they can give rise to balance of payments problems, derived from its remittance of profits abroad.

The region must focus its policies for attracting foreign investment in sectors that contribute to structural change and reduce external sector pressures
